On the main screen, you can enable the display of Notes/Messages which gives you an icon on the far right if you have recorded a note or sent a message to a client. My suggestion would be that the message icon changes (or changes colour) to indicate whether the message has been read and a different icon (or colour) if a reply has been posted. Much like WhatsApp and any other messaging interface really.
